Three generations of Goffs celebrate over 50 years in business

When plumber Dossie Goff decided to take on some side business while working for Valley Pump & Equipment back in the 1950s, a septic truck and his good name would lay the foundation for more than five decades of successful business in Emmett. Today, Goff’s Plumbing is going strong in its third generation as a family-owned business.

Goff’s has been operating from the same location – 1235 Allen Lane off of Mill Road – since it opened its doors in 1962. Today, with Dossie’s grandson Jeff and his wife Misty as owners, Goff’s Plumbing continues to build its reputation for plumbing, septic and portable toilet services throughout the Emmett Valley and beyond.

“It wasn’t that long ago that Mom was doing everything by hand and there wasn’t a computer in here,” Jeff said last week from the shop’s main office, where computers now help Misty track everything from customer history to water and sewer lines and septic tank locations. Advances in technology have also given rise to cameras so accurate that they take the guesswork out of locating underground problems such as sewer line blockages.

And while modern-day tools help the business thrive, it’s the company’s reputation for quality and commitment that keeps customers coming back. Last winter, when lines were freezing all over Gem County, Goff’s crews were operating seven days a week, sometimes 20 hours a day. Emergency response in both plumbing and portable toilets is a big part of the business, Misty said.

Goff’s offers residential and commercial plumbing service and repair, sewer and drain cleaning, sewer camera service, backflow assembly testing, water heater maintenance and repair, septic services and inspections, and portable toilet services.

Four employees help cover all the bases: Malcolm Burgess handles portable toilet delivery, pickup and service and helps out in the office when the seasonal demands for service drop off; plumber Jim McCall works on new construction, remodels and repairs; Scott Rhodes is the septic go-to guy and cleans residential and commercial sewer lines; and Bill Harmon will join Goff’s in November to take on service calls for residential and commercial customers. Jeff and Misty also have some extra help when needed. “Our three Goff boys, Dossie, Danny and Riley, are a great help with prepping Porta Potties,” Misty said.

“We would love to thank our customers for being so loyal and sticking with us through the years,” Misty said. “This is not possible without them.”

Prepare for winter temps

As temperatures drop, Goff’s offers these winter plumbing tips:

–  Get heat tape plugged in and make sure it’s working.

–  Cover vents and openings in foundation.

– Disconnect garden hoses from outside faucets.

 – Those on city services, run a trickle of water during risk of freeze.
